Backtester FAQ & Glossary
Quick answers and the vocabulary, defined.
Does a good backtest guarantee future profit?
No. A backtest tells you whether an idea has had an edge and how painful holding it was — it frames probability, never certainty. Markets change, and past results do not guarantee future returns.
Glossary
- Equity curve — growth of $1 following the rule over time.
- Hit rate — the share of trades that were profitable.
- Expectancy — average profit per trade, combining hit rate with average win and loss.
- Maximum drawdown — the deepest peak-to-trough loss along the equity curve.
- Out-of-sample — data the rule was not built on, used to validate it.
